Rajouri Garden Hit-and-Run: Speeding SUV kills 45-year-old man, driver arrested by Delhi police

A 45-year-old man was killed after a speeding SUV struck him while he was walking home from work in Delhi's Rajouri Garden. Police tracked down and arrested the accused driver within a day using eyewitness evidence.

New Delhi: A 45-year-old man lost his life after being hit by a speeding SUV while walking home from work in Delhi's Rajouri Garden. Police have arrested the accused driver and seized the vehicle involved in the incident, officials said on Sunday.

The accident took place on Saturday in West Delhi, and the suspect was traced and taken into custody the following day after investigators identified the vehicle through eyewitness information.

Victim Was Returning Home After Work

The deceased was identified as Uday Kumar, also known as Uday Mahato, a resident of Khyala. He worked at a private shop in Rajouri Garden and was returning home on foot with his friend, Subhash Kumar, after completing his work for the day.

According to police, the two men were walking along the roadside when a speeding Scorpio SUV struck Uday before fleeing the scene. Subhash narrowly escaped the collision.

An eyewitness who saw the incident noted the vehicle's registration number and later shared the details with police, providing a crucial lead in the investigation.

Victim Declared Dead at Hospital

After the crash, Subhash immediately rushed the injured Uday to Guru Gobind Singh Hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

Police said they received information about the incident through a hospital notification and immediately launched an inquiry. Officers visited the hospital and later inspected the accident site as part of the investigation.

Driver Identified and Arrested

Based on the registration number provided by the eyewitness, investigators identified the SUV and traced its owner.

The accused, identified as 25-year-old Devansh Kumar, a resident of Naraina Vihar, was arrested on Sunday. Police also seized the Scorpio allegedly involved in the fatal accident.

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, and further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the crash.

Family Seeks Swift Justice

Following the incident, the victim's family, including his wife and two children, demanded immediate action against the driver. Police confirmed that the post-mortem examination has been completed and the body has been handed over to the family for the last rites.

Authorities said the investigation will continue as they gather additional evidence related to the fatal road accident.
