New Delhi: A priceless medicinal treasure has been discovered in the high Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand.
Dr Vijay Bhatt, a retired senior scientist from the Herbal Research Institute (Mandal), has identified the rare Chaga mushroom in remote areas such as Baling and Seepu in Dharchula, as well as parts of the Niti Valley.
Known globally for its powerful anti-cancer properties, this discovery has generated excitement among scientists and researchers.
According to experts, the Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) grows only on the trunks of birch trees that are over 100 years old, making it extremely rare.
Until now, it was believed that Chaga was found mainly in the cold forests of Siberia and Russia. Its presence in Uttarakhand at altitudes above 3,000 meters marks a significant scientific finding.
The mushroom has a dark brown to black appearance, resembling burnt charcoal or a beehive.
High Value in the International Market
Chaga mushroom is highly prized in the global herbal medicine market. In major Indian cities such as Delhi, imported Chaga from Russia and Siberia sells for Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 per kilogram.
Experts believe that with proper conservation and scientific cultivation, this rare fungus could become a valuable source of income for villagers in border and high-altitude regions.
Used as a Medicinal Tea
Dr Bhatt explained that Chaga is scientifically dried and powdered, then brewed as an herbal tea, often consumed with honey. The mushroom is rich in Vitamin D2, polysaccharides, antioxidants, and essential minerals.
He has shared this herbal tea with patients in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Chandigarh, receiving highly encouraging feedback. Cancer patients and individuals suffering from liver-related ailments have reported notable benefits.
Why Is the Chaga Mushroom Special?
Extremely rare growth: Grows only as a parasite on century-old birch trees
Powerful immunity booster: Enhances the body’s defense system and fights infections
Anti-cancer properties: Antioxidants help prevent lung, breast, and liver cancer
Diabetes support: Helps regulate blood sugar levels and detoxify the body
Important Advisory
Dr Vijay Bhatt has issued a strong warning that wild mushrooms are difficult to identify, and consuming them without expert guidance can be dangerous or even fatal.
He emphasized that Chaga should only be used after proper scientific identification and processing.
This rare Himalayan discovery not only highlights the region’s rich biodiversity but also opens new possibilities for medical research, conservation, and sustainable livelihoods.
