New Delhi: Uttarakhand is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its formation today, November 9 marking an important milestone for the Himalayan state known for its spiritual heritage, natural beauty, and resilient communities.
Formed in the year 2000 as India’s 27th state after long-standing public demand, Uttarakhand has since transitioned from a region of scattered hill towns to a rapidly developing state with growing national and global relevance.

The Silver Jubilee celebrations across the state featured cultural programmes, official ceremonies, and tributes to the activists and citizens who played a pivotal role in the Uttarakhand statehood movement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to greet the people of Uttarakhand on the momentous day. Emphasising the state’s natural beauty and development-oriented mindset, he wrote:
“On the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Uttarakhand, my best wishes to all my brothers and sisters of the state. Nestled in the lap of nature, this sacred land of ours is today accelerating progress in every field, including tourism. On this special occasion, I wish happiness, prosperity, good fortune, and good health to its humble, hardworking, and godlike people.”
Modi’s message reflected the Centre’s recognition of Uttarakhand’s achievements in the past two decades particularly in tourism expansion, connectivity projects, hydropower development, and disaster response improvements. The Prime Minister has repeatedly highlighted the state’s potential as a global destination for wellness tourism, yoga, spirituality, and adventure sports.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended his greetings on the Silver Jubilee of the state’s formation. In his message on X, Shah said:
“May Uttarakhand continue to advance at the pace of good governance and public welfare and gain further momentum and strength.”
Shah acknowledged the state government’s initiatives to enhance road and air connectivity, strengthen grassroots development, and expand welfare programmes in remote mountainous regions. He also praised Uttarakhand’s strides in public service delivery and disaster preparedness, crucial in a state prone to floods, landslides, and seismic activity.
