Jammu: Security forces achieved a major success in Jammu and Kashmir after an alleged Over Ground Worker (OGW) was arrested during a joint counter-terror operation in Baramulla district on Sunday. Officials said illegal arms, live ammunition and other incriminating items were recovered from the accused, triggering a fresh criminal investigation into his suspected links with terror networks.
According to officials, a joint security naka was established at the Zandfaran-Goriwan Crossing in the Narwav area by personnel of the Indian Army's 46 Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police, the 53 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the 112 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF). The operation was part of intensified counter-insurgency measures, area domination patrols and enhanced security arrangements in the region.
During the checking operation, security personnel noticed a suspicious man approaching the naka from the Goriwan side. Officials said the suspect allegedly tried to flee after spotting the joint security team. Alert troops immediately chased him, overpowered him and took him into custody at the spot.
During the subsequent search, security forces recovered one camouflaged MP-5 type pistol, one magazine loaded with 10 live 9mm cartridges, one mobile phone and one black backpack. The seized weapon, ammunition and electronic device have been taken into custody as evidence and are expected to undergo forensic and technical examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrested person has been identified as Aijaz Ahmad Ganie, son of Late Mohammad Sultan Ganie and a resident of Namblan in the Sheeri area of Baramulla district.
Police have registered FIR No. 37/2026 at Sheeri Police Station under the relevant provisions of law. Investigators are examining the accused's alleged role as an Over Ground Worker, his communication records, possible links with terrorist organisations, source of the recovered weapon and any logistical support network. Officials said further legal proceedings will be initiated based on the findings of the investigation.
Security officials said the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, BSF and other security agencies remain committed to maintaining peace and law and order in the Kashmir Valley. They added that coordinated anti-terror operations will continue and strict legal action will be taken against anti-national elements and individuals allegedly involved in providing support, shelter or logistics to terrorist organisations in accordance with the law.
