Kanpur: Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Shri Prakash Jaiswal passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2025. After suffering from long-standing health problems, 81-year-old Jaiswal's health suddenly deteriorated. His family rushed him to the Cardiology Hospital in Kanpur, where doctors immediately pronounced him dead. Hospital Director Dr. Rakesh Verma stated that he had passed away before reaching the hospital.
Shri Prakash Jaiswal was born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on September 25, 1944. Born in Kanpur, Mr. Jaiswal dedicated his entire political and social life to the city. He served as Minister of State for Home Affairs and later as Minister of Coal in the Manmohan Singh government. Along with politics, he remained active in social work and was always at the forefront of Kanpur's development, industrial revival, and raising local issues at the national level.
Shriprakash Jaiswal, who entered politics in the 1980s, had a highly influential career. He had a strong hold within the Congress party, particularly in the Uttar Pradesh unit. He was considered a key player in strategy-making. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kanpur for three consecutive terms in 1999, 2004, and 2009. His calm demeanor, forthrightness, and composed political temperament earned him respect even from opposition leaders.
As news of Shriprakash Jaiswal's passing spread, a wave of grief swept across the political circles of Kanpur and across the state. Many senior leaders paid tribute, describing him as a down-to-earth and struggling public leader. Shriprakash Jaiswal's passing is an irreparable loss not only for the Congress party but for the entire Kanpur community. Jaiswal, who had been suffering from health issues for a long time, had become increasingly critical over the past few days. According to family members, his condition deteriorated significantly since Friday morning, and he was taken to Cardiology Hospital late that evening. Upon arrival, doctors confirmed his death after examining him. The primary cause of death is believed to be heart-related complications. Representatives of political parties in Kanpur have announced a joint condolence meeting. Shriprakash Jaiswal's body will be given its final resting place in Kanpur on Saturday morning.
