CJI Surya Kant backed the Supreme Court judge strength hike, stressing faster disposal of pending cases, while also raising concern over continued caste discrimination in society.
New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant described the Centre’s decision to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court of India as a “significant and necessary step,” saying it would help speed up the disposal of pending cases, especially those awaiting constitutional bench hearings.
Boost to Judicial Efficiency
Speaking at the 8th memorial lecture of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant highlighted key issues ranging from judicial reforms to social equality, the CJI said that expanding the court’s strength from 34 to 38 judges would ease the growing burden on the judiciary.
He noted that with a continuous rise in case filings and a mounting backlog, increasing the number of judges was essential to ensure faster justice delivery. According to him, once the required legal amendments are in place, the move will enhance the efficiency of the judicial system.
Remarks on Caste Discrimination
Reflecting on social issues, Justice Surya Kant said caste-based discrimination continues to persist in the country. Recalling Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, he remarked that if such discrimination did not exist, courts would not be burdened with so many related cases. He also referenced Dinkar’s iconic work Rashmirathi while stressing the need for equality in society.
The programme was attended by several dignitaries, including Prof. Rameshwar Rai, Dr. Vikas Singh, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari. Tiwari was also conferred with the “Dinkar Sanskriti Samman” during the event.
Role of Literature in Society
The Chief Justice emphasised the role of writers and poets in shaping society. “Our heads are held high only when we are respected in society,” he said, adding that literary figures have always contributed significantly to social development.
Need for Continuous Constitutional Benches
Highlighting judicial priorities, he stressed the importance of timely disposal of sensitive and constitutional matters. He pointed out that many key cases remain pending due to the need for dedicated constitutional benches, and a larger bench strength would help address this gap.
Personal Reflection and Call for Equality
Sharing a personal note, Justice Surya Kant recalled his father’s advice to read Dinkar for understanding justice and social welfare. He concluded by underlining that equality is a fundamental right and must be upheld in both law and society.
