A fresh western disturbance combined with a strong subtropical westerly jet stream has made weather conditions unstable across India. Snowfall and rain are expected in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while dense fog and cold winds continue to affect the northern plains, including Delhi-NCR.
Dense Fog and Cold Winds Grip North India as Weather Turns Unstable
New Delhi: The impact of a western disturbance and a strong subtropical westerly jet stream is once again clearly visible on the country's weather. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain and snowfall activities may intensify in the western Himalayan regions on February 5th and 6th. Light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
The effects of snowfall in the hilly areas are being felt in the plains. Strong cold winds are blowing in the plains of North India, including Delhi-NCR, causing shivering despite normal temperatures. Dense fog during the morning and night hours is adding to people's discomfort.
The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog warning in Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and parts of Sikkim. Fog may impact road, rail, and air traffic. Drivers have been advised to be cautious.
Recent snowfall in Himachal Pradesh has severely impacted life. Several roads in Manali, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kinnaur districts have been closed. An avalanche was also reported in the Atal Tunnel area near Rohtang, disrupting traffic. According to the Meteorological Department, light rain and snowfall may occur again in the state on February 6, 8, and 9.
The Meteorological Department says that there will be no significant drop in minimum temperatures in northwest, central, and eastern India over the next seven days. However, cold winds will continue to impact the cold. In Maharashtra, temperatures may see a slight increase followed by a further drop in the next 24 hours.
Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas due to the influence of a trough extending from Kerala to the Karnataka coast in South India. Overall, these weather fluctuations are expected to continue in various parts of the country.
