New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Parliamentary Board Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Tuesday after successfully recovering from a systemic infection.

The 79-year-old veteran leader had been admitted on the night of March 24 at around 10.22 pm, reporting a fever.

According to hospital chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop, she was treated with a course of antibiotics. She responded well to the treatment and will continue her follow-up care at home.

Her hospitalization led her son, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to cancel his planned visit to Kerala on March 25, where he was to kick off the party’s poll campaign. In his place, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched the campaign. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Member of Parliament from Wayanad, also visited her at the hospital.

This marks the second time this year that Sonia Gandhi has been treated at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She was previously admitted on January 5 for respiratory discomfort and was discharged a few days later.

Just before her March 24 hospitalization, Sonia Gandhi had criticized the Centre for its silence on the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on March 3, describing it as “abdication rather than neutrality.”
