New Delhi: A journey that began nearly a century ago has reached a landmark moment. Southern Railway has completed electrification of its entire 5,068-route kilometre Broad Gauge network, marking a major shift towards faster, cleaner and more efficient train operations.

The milestone was achieved after the completion of the final 71-km Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi railway section in Tamil Nadu. The development is significant because trains across Southern Railway’s network can now run on electric power without stopping for traction changes between diesel and electric systems.

For millions of passengers who depend on Southern Railway every day, this change may not be visible from the platform, but it will bring a major transformation behind the scenes — smoother operations, better locomotive utilisation, improved reliability and a cleaner railway system.

From Madras’ First Electric Train to a Fully Electric Network

The zone introduced electric traction on May 11, 1931, when Madras became the second metropolitan city in India after Bombay to get electric railway services. Decades later, in 1968, the Madras Beach-Tambaram section received 25 kV AC electrification, setting the foundation for modern railway operations.

Since then, thousands of kilometres of railway tracks have gradually been converted from diesel-powered operations to electric traction. The completion of the Pattukkottai-Karaikkudi section has now closed the final gap in this long transformation.

The biggest advantage of complete electrification is that trains will no longer need to change traction systems while travelling through electrified and non-electrified sections.
