Madrid: Spain is set to witness a historic celestial spectacle on Wednesday, as a total solar eclipse will darken parts of the country for the first time in more than a century. The rare astronomical event has attracted scientists, photographers and thousands of skywatchers from across the world, while India will miss the visual phenomenon because it will occur during nighttime.
The Moon’s shadow will sweep across the Earth, creating a brief period of darkness in parts of Greenland, Iceland, the Atlantic region, Spain and Portugal. For Spain, the event is particularly special because the Iberian Peninsula is experiencing its first total solar eclipse visible in over 100 years, turning the country into a global hub for astronomy tourism.
Millions of people are expected to look towards the sky as the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, completely blocking sunlight for observers located inside the narrow path of totality.
The eclipse will pass across Spain from west to east, with several regions and cities positioned to witness the complete disappearance of the Sun. Locations including León, Zaragoza, Valencia and other parts of the country are expected to offer some of the best views of the rare event.
The timing of the eclipse makes it even more dramatic because Spain will experience totality close to sunset. As the Sun moves lower towards the horizon, observers will witness a unique combination of a solar eclipse and a twilight-like landscape.
The historic eclipse has created a major tourism opportunity for Spain. Hotels, travel companies and local administrations have prepared special arrangements as thousands of visitors travel to areas inside the path of totality. The event is expected to benefit rural communities and locations known for clear skies and low light pollution.
Many villages have transformed into temporary astronomy centres, offering viewing locations and scientific programmes for visitors. Spain is also preparing for a sequence of major astronomical events, with another total solar eclipse expected in 2027 and an annular eclipse in 2028 as part of a rare Iberian eclipse series.
A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon perfectly aligns between the Earth and the Sun. The Moon’s apparent size from Earth becomes large enough to cover the Sun’s bright outer surface, known as the photosphere.
During the short period of totality, the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible. Scientists use these rare moments to study solar magnetic fields, solar winds and changes in space weather. The eclipse also provides researchers with an opportunity to examine how sudden changes in sunlight affect Earth’s atmosphere, temperature patterns and animal behaviour.
One of the most fascinating effects of a total solar eclipse is the sudden transformation of the environment. As sunlight disappears, temperatures can drop, shadows become sharper and the sky takes on unusual colours. Birds and animals may react to the sudden darkness by changing their normal daytime behaviour. Previous eclipse studies have shown that wildlife often responds as if night has arrived early, with some species becoming inactive while others begin evening routines.
Before totality begins, observers may witness some of the most famous eclipse phenomena.
Baily’s beads appear when sunlight passes through valleys and uneven areas on the Moon’s surface, creating small flashes of light around the lunar edge. Moments later, the final burst of sunlight creates the spectacular diamond ring effect before complete darkness covers the Sun. These events are not only visually stunning but also help astronomers understand the Moon’s surface and improve eclipse prediction technology.
While Spain and parts of Europe prepare for the rare event, Indian skywatchers will not be able to see the eclipse directly. The reason is geographical location and timing. The eclipse will occur when it is nighttime in India, meaning the Sun will be below the horizon.
The global eclipse event will take place between the evening of August 12 and the early hours of August 13 according to Indian Standard Time. Since the Sun will not be visible from India during the eclipse period, no location in the country will witness the total or partial phases. Astronomy enthusiasts in India can still watch online livestreams from international space agencies and observatories.
Indian astronomy lovers will have to wait several years for the next opportunity to watch a total solar eclipse from the country. Until then, major international eclipses will remain accessible through digital broadcasts and scientific livestreams.
Experts have warned people against directly viewing the Sun without proper protection. Ordinary sunglasses cannot block dangerous solar radiation. Special eclipse glasses with certified solar filters are required during partial phases of the eclipse.
Only observers located inside the path of totality can briefly view the solar corona without protection during the complete darkness phase. Protective filters must be used again immediately after totality ends.
The Spain eclipse of 2026 will be remembered as a landmark astronomical event, bringing together science, tourism and public fascination as the Moon briefly hides the Sun and creates one of nature’s most dramatic displays.
