Mumbai: Indian equity benchmarks closed in the red on Thursday, extending losses for the fourth trading session in a row as selling pressure persisted across key sectors.

The BSE Sensex dropped 503.76 points, or 0.60%, to settle at 83,313.93, while the NSE Nifty50 declined 133.20 points, or 0.52%, ending the day at 25,642.80, slipping below the crucial 25,700 mark.

Market sentiment remained cautious amid profit booking at higher levels, with heavyweight stocks weighing on the indices. Broader markets also mirrored the weak trend, as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of key global cues and macroeconomic updates.

Sector-wise, select financials, IT and FMCG stocks saw selling pressure, while limited buying support emerged in defensive pockets.

Global Cues Remain Volatile

Global markets remained on edge as US equities witnessed sharp swings overnight. The Dow Jones bounced back strongly, recovering from an early 400-point decline to finish nearly 260 points higher. In contrast, heavy selling in technology stocks dragged the Nasdaq lower by almost 350 points.

Bitcoin slipped to its weakest levels since October 2024, reflecting continued risk aversion. The dollar index hovered near 97.5, while the rupee weakened by 17 paise to close at 90.44 against the US dollar.

Commodities Stay Choppy

Commodities saw heightened volatility through Wednesday’s session. Gold and silver recorded sharp intraday swings, with gold dropping nearly Rs 7,000 from the day’s high and silver plunging around Rs 26,000 before staging a partial recovery.

Global precious metals regained momentum overnight, while crude oil extended gains for a second consecutive session, trading close to USD 69 per barrel.
