New Delhi: Supreme Court of India came down heavily on Tuesday, 14th July 2026 on popular stand-up comedian Samay Raina and Podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia for failing to comply with its earlier directions in the India’s Got Latent controversy case.

The Supreme Court stated that Ssmay had “taken the court for a ride” and labeled both of them as “self-styled youth icons”, portraying serious concern over their alleged non-compliance.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh each on Samay and Ranveer Allahbadia for failing to comply with its earlier directions. The apex court granted them two weeks to file a compliance affidavit.

The CJI observed that they appeared to believe that being abroad made them beyond the court’s jurisdiction. The CJI observed "Let them suffer now. If this is not arrogance, then we have to change the Oxford dictionary also."

What was the controversy?

The controversy erupted after popular YouTuber and Podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia made an “obscene and offensive” comment on Samay Raina’s show India’s Got Latent and it was widely criticised.

Ranveer’s comments sparked public outrage which led to multiple FIRs registered against Allahbadia across India for allegedly promoting obscenity and using indecent language.

The apex court has strongly criticised his remarks, observing that freedom of speech did not means license to speak anything that violates societal norms, while also granting him interim protection and letting him to seek police security in views of reported death threats
