Telangana HC grants interim bail to Pawan Khera (Internet)
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Friday granted anticipatory bail for one week to congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with a case linked to allegations involving Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Justice K Sujana, while delivering the order, allowed Khera temporary protection and directed him to approach the appropriate court within a week for further relief. The court stated that the petitioner would be granted limited-time protection subject to certain conditions.
Legal Dispute Over Jurisdiction
During the hearing, the Assam Police, represented by Advocate General Devajit Saikia, questioned the maintainability of Khera’s plea in Hyderabad. The prosecution argued that Khera, a Delhi resident, should instead seek anticipatory bail in Assam, where the FIR was registered.
The state’s counsel also raised concerns about Khera’s movements, alleging he could evade law enforcement. It was argued that there was no compelling reason preventing him from appearing before courts in Assam.

Defense Calls Case Politically Motivated
Khera’s counsel, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, countered the claims, stating that the case is driven by political motives and amounts to vendetta. The defense maintained that the allegations lack merit and are intended to target the Congress leader.
Background of the FIR
The case stems from allegations made by Khera claiming that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds multiple passports. Following this, an FIR was registered at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to cheating, forgery, false statements, and defamation.

Earlier this week, Assam Police teams conducted searches at Khera’s residences in both Delhi and Hyderabad. Reports indicate that law enforcement officials had been attempting to locate him in connection with the ongoing investigation.
