‘Oppn has made a big mistake, will have to face consequences’: Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed strong disappointment over the Lok Sabha’s decision to reject the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which sought to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures.

Official surceases said the PM made the remarks will chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to discuss the defeat of the Women's Reservation Bill on Friday in the lower house. The opposition parties would “regret for the rest of their lives” for not supporting the landmark proposal, he had said.

He criticised the opposition for blocking the Bill, describing their stance as a “serious mistake” that would have lasting political consequences.

Backgrounder Of Voting

A total of 298 members voted in favour of the Bill and 230 against it, with the House strength at the time of voting being 528.

It failed to meet the two-thirds majority mark of 352 required for a Constitution Amendment Bill to pass.

Following the defeat, the government withdrew two allied legislations - the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026 - which were linked to the Constitutional amendment.
