Tirupati Temple receives crores in donations daily
Amaravati: The world-renowned Tirupati Balaji Temple, one of the richest and most visited religious shrines globally, receives donations worth several crores of rupees every day. From cash and coins to gold and silver ornaments, every offering made by devotees is meticulously counted, verified and secured through a sophisticated system managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
According to TTD officials, the temple's daily donations range between ₹2.5 crore and ₹6 crore. To handle the enormous volume of contributions, the temple administration has established a highly regulated process backed by advanced surveillance technology, strict security protocols and multiple layers of monitoring.
From Hundis to Counting Centre
Devotees deposit their offerings in large donation boxes known as hundis. On an average day, six to twelve hundis are filled with cash, coins, jewellery and other valuables.
These hundis are transported under tight security to the Parakamani Building, a dedicated facility where donations are counted and processed. The entire operation is monitored through CCTV surveillance and supervised by security personnel and authorised volunteers.
Strict Protocols for Counting Staff
The donation-counting process is overseen by the TTD Vigilance and Security Wing, which works in coordination with the Andhra Pradesh Police. The department is headed by a Chief Vigilance and Security Officer of IPS rank.
To ensure transparency and prevent theft, employees handling donations must follow stringent rules. Staff members are allowed to wear only a traditional dhoti while working in the counting hall, and personal belongings are strictly prohibited.
Entry to the counting area is restricted to authorised personnel. Volunteers involved in counting coins and cash undergo multiple rounds of frisking before entering and after leaving the facility.
Cash, Coins and Jewellery Processed Separately
Inside the Parakamani Building, TTD employees and Srivari Sevaks segregate donations into separate categories, including coins, currency notes and jewellery.
Coins are counted and packed using specialised machines, while currency notes are bundled and verified. Gold and silver ornaments are securely stored, evaluated every month and subsequently transferred to the TTD Treasury in Tirupati.
Officials say the process is designed to ensure complete accountability and maintain accurate records of every donation received by the temple.
AI-Powered Surveillance Strengthens Security
A key feature of Tirupati's donation management system is its advanced surveillance network. The Parakamani Building is equipped with high-resolution CCTV cameras integrated with AI-powered monitoring systems that track movements and flag suspicious activity.
TTD officials and police personnel continuously oversee the operation, while sensitive tasks involving valuables are largely handled by permanent employees rather than outsourced staff.
A Benchmark for Religious Donation Management
Given the scale of donations received every day, Tirupati's donation management system is regarded as one of the most sophisticated among religious institutions in India.
Over the years, TTD has combined technology-driven monitoring, strict security measures and rigorous auditing practices to ensure devotees' offerings are managed with maximum transparency and accountability. The model is now widely considered a benchmark for large-scale religious donation management across the country.
