New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of three High Court Chief Justices as judges of the Supreme Court, marking a significant development in the appointment process for the country’s highest judicial body. The Collegium in its resolution issued on Monday, recommended the names of Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court.
According to the resolution, Justice Sunita Agarwal, who is currently serving as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, has been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court. The Collegium has also recommended Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court for appointment as a judge of the top court.
The third recommendation is Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana, whose name has also been proposed for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The recommendation was made during the Supreme Court Collegium meeting held on Monday. The Collegium that considered the recommendations included the Chief Justice of India along with Justices Vikram Nath, B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh and P S Narasimha.
Following the recommendation, the proposal will now move through the established procedure for the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court Collegium is responsible for recommending judicial appointments and transfers as part of the constitutional process governing higher judiciary appointments in India.
