New Delhi: The High Court in London has dismissed a petition filed by diamond merchant Nirav Modi, in which he sought to reopen his extradition case. This case pertains to a massive banking fraud linked to India's Punjab National Bank (PNB). Following this verdict, the process for his extradition to India is now expected to accelerate, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
The London High Court explicitly stated that Nirav Modi's petition presented no "exceptional circumstances" that would warrant reopening the case. According to the Court, the previous rulings were sound, and there are no substantive grounds to overturn them.
Following this verdict, it has become evident that Nirav Modi now has very limited legal options remaining.
India's investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has remained actively involved in this matter throughout the proceedings. The CBI team, in collaboration with the UK's Crown Prosecution Service, presented robust arguments before the court.
CBI officials traveled to London to participate in the hearings and submitted all necessary documents and responses on behalf of the Government of India. The agency has hailed this verdict as a major legal triumph for India.
In his petition, Nirav Modi had argued that he would not receive fair treatment in India and that his human rights could be violated. Citing the "Bhandari judgment," he had sought to have his appeal reopened.
However, the Court deemed these arguments insufficient and dismissed the petition.
Nirav Modi was arrested in the UK in 2019 and has remained incarcerated there ever since. The Government of India has been pursuing his extradition since 2018.
UK courts have already approved his extradition, and several of his subsequent appeals have been dismissed. Although some legal hurdles arose in the interim, these were resolved in August 2025. What is the PNB Scam?
This case involves a bank fraud amounting to approximately ₹6,498 crore, in which Nirav Modi is accused of colluding with bank officials to siphon off funds through fraudulent guarantees.
It is considered one of India's largest bank scams and, for this very reason, has garnered significant attention on the international stage.
Now that the High Court has dismissed the petition, Nirav Modi's extradition to India is considered virtually certain. He is expected to be brought back to India in the near future, where he will face trial.
This verdict is being hailed as a major legal victory for the government of India.
