New Delhi: The recent visit of US Ambassador Sergio Gor to Jammu and Kashmir has drawn attention for its symbolic significance, with experts describing it as a reflection of changing diplomatic perceptions about the region.
During his Srinagar visit, Gor praised the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and described the region as an important part of India. His relaxed engagements, including a shikara ride on Dal Lake, a visit to Pari Mahal, and an unplanned stop at a Kashmiri carpet showroom where he interacted with local artisans, sent a strong message about normalcy and development in the Valley.
Experts believe the visit carries significance not only for Pakistan but also for separatist groups and international observers who have closely followed the Kashmir issue.
Kashmir affairs expert Umar Maqbool said that US policy and diplomatic engagement on Kashmir have evolved over the years.
Historically, American administrations have often maintained a cautious approach on the Kashmir issue to avoid creating tensions with Pakistan. US diplomats visiting the region have traditionally engaged with government representatives, mainstream political leaders and, at times, separatist groups as well.
Observers highlighted that Sergio Gor’s visit was different from several previous diplomatic visits, as he did not meet any separatist leader or self-proclaimed human rights activist during his Jammu and Kashmir tour.
Experts said this reflects a shift in the nature of international engagement with the region, with greater focus now being placed on official institutions and development-related issues.
Hurriyat Conference-linked religious leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq did not directly comment on Gor’s remarks about Kashmir. He said the ambassador’s visit was currently limited to meetings with Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor, while suggesting that the scope of dialogue should be expanded further.
Former Inspector General of Police and Kashmir expert Ashkoor Wani said that Ambassador Gor’s description of Jammu and Kashmir as a “vital part” of India carries significance in the current geopolitical environment.
According to Wani, the remarks represent growing international acceptance of India’s position on Kashmir and underline changing diplomatic equations in the region.
The visit, along with Gor’s public interactions and comments, has become a major talking point in discussions around Kashmir’s evolving global image.
