Uttarakhand: Bus plunges into gorge in Almora; 7 Dead, several injured

Almora: At least seven people were killed, and 11 others injured after the bus in Almora’s Bhikiyasen on Tuesday morning.

A police official said, the bus belonging to Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), was on its way to Ramnagar when it lost control near Bhikiyasen.

Teams from the district administration, police and state disaster response force (SDRF) were rushed to the spot following the accident. The injured have been sent to a nearby hospital

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Devendra Pincha said, “Eighteen people were travelling in the KMVN mini bus when it lost control and fell into the gorge. The bodies have been retrieved, and the injured have been sent to the hospital.”

According to the police, the cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.

Every year, over 1,000 road accidents are reported in the state, with the treacherous, winding, and narrow roads on the mountainous terrain often exacerbating the danger.

This issue is particularly acute during the monsoon and winter seasons, when poor visibility makes already challenging journeys even more hazardous.

Bus Plunges into Deep Gorge
A bus went out of control and plunged into a deep gorge near Shilapani in the Bhikiyasain area of ​​the district. Seven people lost their lives in the accident, while 12 passengers, including two women, were seriously injured.

Upon receiving information about the incident, the local police, administration, and rescue teams immediately rushed to the spot. The injured were rescued from the gorge and admitted to nearby hospitals, where they are undergoing treatment.

According to officials, there were a total of 19 passengers on the bus. The cause of the accident is being investigated. It is suspected that the accident occurred due to the driver losing control of the vehicle. The deceased include five men and two women.

The deceased include:
Govind Ballabh (80 years), his wife Parvati Devi (75 years), both residents of Jamoli; Subedar Nandan Singh Adhikari (65 years), Jamoli; Tara Devi (50 years), Bali; Ganesh (25 years); Umesh (25 years); and an unidentified young man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed.

Nanda Ballabh (50 years), Naubara; Rakesh Kumar (40 years), Naubara; Nandi Devi (40 years), Singoli; Hansi Sati (36 years), Singoli; Mohit Sati (16 years), Naughar; Buddhi Ballabh (58 years), Amoli; Harichandra (62 years), Pali; Bhupendra Singh (64 years), Jamoli; Jitendra Rekhari (37 years), Vinayak; bus driver Naveen Chandra (55 years); Himanshu Paliwal (17 years); and Prakash Chand (43 years), Chacharoti.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He prayed for the peace of the departed souls and wished that God would grant strength to the bereaved families.

The Chief Minister has given strict instructions to the district administration to provide immediate and proper medical facilities to the injured.

He said that he is personally monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with the authorities. He also wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
