Vande Mataram Echoes At Red Fort on Independence Day 2026 (Img: X)
New Delhi: India witnessed a historic moment during the 80th Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026, as Vande Mataram was sung during the official Red Fort ceremony for the first time since Independence. The rendition was performed as part of the ceremonial programme and was followed by the National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort ramparts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the significance of the occasion and said, “It is for the first time after Independence that ‘Vande Mataram’ was played at the Red Fort.”
The Prime Minister said the moment reflected the nation’s respect for the song that became a symbol of India’s freedom struggle and patriotic spirit.
The development came shortly after President Droupadi Murmu gave assent to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, extending legal protection to Vande Mataram on similar lines as the National Anthem.

Under the amended law, deliberately preventing the singing of the National Song or disrupting an assembly engaged in its rendition can invite punishment, including imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The full version of Vande Mataram was also performed ahead of and at the conclusion of the President’s address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.
In her address, President Murmu recalled the historical importance of Vande Mataram and said that the song became a powerful voice during the Swadeshi Movement.
She noted that the National Song inspired people during India’s struggle for freedom and reflected the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice.
Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram became one of the most influential symbols of India’s independence movement.
The song motivated generations of freedom fighters and emerged as a powerful expression of national pride during the fight against British rule. Its inclusion in the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort added another chapter to its long historical journey.
