New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the schedule for the election of the next Vice-President. As per the schedule, the last date for nominations is 21 August, while the polling will take place on 9 September. The votes would be counted on the same day, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Election Schedule

The Election Commission has shared a schedule. They will send out a notice about the Vice President election on 7 August. The final date to submit nominations is 21 August. Any nominations submitted on 22 August will be checked.

August 25 is the last day to withdraw a candidacy. Members of Parliament will vote for the Vice President on September 9. The voting will take place from 10 in the morning until 5 in the evening. The elections are for 233 elected members of the Rajya Sabha, 12 nominated members, and 543 members of the Lok Sabha.

Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as Vice President on July 21. His term was supposed to end on August 10, 2027. But he chose to resign because of health issues.

According to the ECI, following Rule 40 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Commission has made a list of all the electors, including their latest addresses. This list is arranged in alphabetical order based on the states and union territories. The list will be available for purchase at a counter set up at the Election Commission of India from the date of the official announcement, said Apurva Kumar Singh, Assistant Director at the Election Commission of India.

After Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned, the Election Commission of India began preparing for the Vice President election. Recently, the Commission appointed a Returning Officer and an Assistant Returning Officer for this election.

In the previous Vice President election, the Secretary General of Lok Sabha was chosen as the Returning Officer, the ECI stated in a statement. Therefore, after consulting with the Ministry of Law and Justice and getting the agreement of the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, the Election Commission has appointed the Secretary General of Rajya Sabha as the Returning Officer for the upcoming Vice President election.
