The apex court stressed the gravity of crimes against women, prioritised the survivor’s safety, and underlined the broader impact such decisions have on society and public confidence in the justice system.
New Delhi: In a major setback for former MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the Unnao rape case, the Supreme Court has stayed the Delhi High Court's order suspending his life sentence. The apex court clearly stated that extreme caution is necessary before granting any relief in such serious and sensitive crimes.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court emphasized the importance of the victim's safety, the spirit of justice, and the broader impact on society. The court also indicated that suspending the sentence in such cases could send a wrong message and demoralize the victim.
The CBI argued that Kuldeep Sengar is an influential person and granting him relief could endanger the safety of the victim and witnesses. The defense, on the other hand, supported the suspension of the sentence on health and legal grounds, but the court did not appear convinced by these arguments.
The Supreme Court's strong remarks made it clear that it is not in favor of leniency in cases of crimes against women. Following this order, Kuldeep Sengar will have to remain in jail for the time being. This decision is not only a relief for the victim but also strengthens public trust in the justice system.
