The collision occurred near Kathalia in Mahishbathan when a bus travelling from Nazirpur to Digha collided head-on with a Maruti van coming from the opposite direction.
Initially, five passengers in the van, including three women and two men, died on the spot. The van driver, Suman Sheikh, who was critically injured, was rushed to Karimpur Rural Hospital and later transferred to Tehatta Sub-divisional Hospital.
