New Delhi: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke on Sunday vowed to continue the party’s efforts despite what he described as illegal arrests and detentions. He said he and his associates would regroup and decide their next course of action once Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka return.
Abhijeet Dipke said he hoped both leaders would be released on Sunday. He also said he was on his way to meet advocate Vrinda Grover to discuss legal matters related to the case.
“Once Saurav and Ashu come, we will gather, restrategize, and determine how to move forward. Given what we have witnessed over the past few days, including the illegal arrests and detentions, it is clear that there is an attempt to intimidate us. However, we will neither be intimidated nor back down. This is a long battle, and we are fully prepared for it. Hopefully, both of them will be released today. I am on my way to meet Vrinda Ma'am to discuss some legal matters regarding this,” said Dipke.
Dipke was granted conditional bail on Saturday, a day after Delhi Police detained him ahead of the proposed “Lehra Do Tiranga” rally at Central Park in Connaught Place. He was subsequently released from Mandir Marg Police Station after police said he was required to sign a peace bond.
He was detained on Friday when prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were in force in Central Delhi, restricting public assemblies. He was later booked under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS in a fresh preventive proceeding, separate from the action taken on October 10.
Ahead of Dipke’s scheduled appearance before the Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) at Mandir Marg Police Station, CJP head of legal affairs Ratna Singh questioned the legality of his arrest.
“The SEM Court should release Abhijeet Dipke, as his arrest is unlawful. He merely urged people to unfurl the Tiranga - how can that by itself be a crime?” she wrote on X.
Singh also alleged that Dipke’s whereabouts had not been disclosed and that his lawyers were denied access to him.
“Delhi Police cannot do unlawful acts under the garb of preventive detention,” she said.
The proposed rally is linked to a broader Opposition campaign against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The campaign has drawn support from INDIA bloc parties, student groups and activists.
The CJP has received backing from several political parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
DMK MP and deputy general secretary Kanimozhi said on Saturday that her party had extended support to the CJP after its leaders were arrested. She added that she had attended a protest in Chennai to convey the party’s solidarity.
Dipke said he and his associates would decide their next steps after Das and Ranka return, while legal discussions over the detentions are also expected to continue.
