New Delhi: Weather conditions across several parts of India are expected to worsen as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain and thunderstorm alert for 11 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
According to the weather department, many regions may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 26. Strong winds reaching speeds of 50 to 80 kmph, thunderstorms and lightning activity are also likely in several areas.
The adverse weather conditions could lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, flash flood risks and landslides in hilly regions.
The IMD said a depression formed over south Chhattisgarh and adjoining south interior Odisha is moving towards the north-northwest direction.
The system is expected to remain active for the next few hours before gradually weakening into a low-pressure area. However, its impact will continue to influence weather conditions across several states.
Rainfall activity is likely in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Haryana and Delhi.
Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness significant rainfall activity under the influence of the weather system. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in both eastern and western parts of the state.
Several districts, including Prayagraj, Lakhimpur Kheri, Maharajganj, Ayodhya, Basti, Lucknow, Barabanki, Moradabad and Bijnor, have been placed under weather watch.
The rainfall spell is expected to continue till September 30, with western UP likely to receive showers between September 27 and 29, while eastern UP may see rain activity till September 30.
In Delhi, cloudy skies with light to moderate rainfall are expected on September 26. The national capital may also experience thunderstorms and winds between 30 and 50 kmph.
Bihar is likely to witness rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching around 60 kmph. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand districts including Dehradun, Pithoragarh and Nainital may receive heavy rainfall.
Authorities have advised caution as continuous rainfall could increase the risk of flooding in plains and landslides in mountainous areas.
