New Delhi: Amidst New Year's celebrations, Delhi residents need to exercise extra caution regarding the weather. According to the Meteorological Department, the capital will experience biting cold and dense fog on December 31st and January 1st. Therefore, along with celebrating, it is crucial to take all necessary precautions against the cold.

Dense Fog and Yellow Alert

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog for both these days. Visibility is expected to be significantly reduced, especially during the morning and late-night hours. This could directly impact road traffic and daily life. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature is expected to be around 22 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature around 8 degrees Celsius.

Possibility of Rain and Clouds

On January 1st, cloudy conditions are expected in Delhi, along with the possibility of light rain in some areas. This is attributed to a new Western Disturbance becoming active in the Himalayan regions. Due to its effect, the maximum temperature may drop by up to 4 degrees, settling between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may rise to 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.

Effect of Cold and Icy Winds

Although sunshine is expected during the afternoon, the cold and icy winds blowing from the mountains will not provide much relief. The feeling of cold will persist throughout the day. The cold will be more intense in the morning and evening, and elderly people and children have been advised to take special precautions.

Impact on Traffic

On Tuesday morning, dense fog covered several areas of Delhi, affecting vehicular movement. A thick layer of fog and smog was observed in Akshardham, JLN Stadium, and surrounding areas. The Delhi Traffic Police has appealed to drivers to use fog lights and low-beam headlights, avoid speeding, and refrain from overtaking.

Pollution Adds to Concerns

Along with the fog, rising pollution is also becoming a cause for concern. According to the CPCB, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 396 in some areas, which falls into the 'very severe' category. The combination of cold weather, fog, and pollution has made the situation in Delhi even more challenging.
