North India’s weather is set to change as western disturbances may bring rain and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between February 13 and 16. Meanwhile, temperatures are expected to rise across the plains, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
Weather Shift in North India: Rain and Snow Alert for Himalayan States
New Delhi: The weather in North India is set to change once again. Rain and snowfall are expected in the western Himalayan regions in the coming days, while temperatures in the plains are forecast to rise sharply. This change in weather is believed to be due to an active western disturbance and a trough in the upper atmosphere. This could increase the cold in the hilly states, while the cold in the plains will weaken.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, light rain and snowfall are expected in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand around February 13 and 16. In contrast, the plains, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, are expected to experience bright sunshine and rising daytime temperatures. Minimum temperatures are also gradually increasing.
According to the Meteorological Department, a cyclonic circulation is persisting at an altitude of about 3.1 kilometers over Punjab and adjoining northern Pakistan. A trough is also active at mid- and upper-level levels. A western disturbance is already in effect, while two new, weaker western disturbances are expected to affect the western Himalayan region from February 13th and 16th. These systems are creating conditions for cloudiness, rain, and snowfall.
Fresh snowfall has been recorded in the high altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh. New snowfall has been confirmed at Rohtang Pass and Shinkula Pass. Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.5 degrees Celsius, which is quite low for this time of year. Dense fog was also observed in many plain areas during the morning hours, affecting visibility.
The weather is expected to remain dry in most districts of Uttarakhand, but fog may occur in the morning and evening in plain areas like Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. Minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in many states of eastern India over the next three days, after which temperatures may remain stable.
Due to a cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining sea areas, strong winds of 35 to 45 kmph are likely to blow, with gusts reaching 55 kmph. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen to check the latest warnings before venturing into the sea and to stay away from the sea during bad weather.
