New Delhi: Tension gripped Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain after a protest linked to the Shahi Masjid road-widening dispute turned into a confrontation between protesters and police. Stone pelting was reported during the clash, following which security forces used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the dispute surrounding the proposed road expansion work in the city.
The issue is connected to a road-widening project being carried out ahead of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028. A portion of the Shahi Masjid structure falls within the proposed alignment of the project, leading to objections from some local groups.
