New Delhi: India and Pakistan were born out of the same historic moment in 1947, but the two countries celebrate their Independence Days on different dates. While India observes Independence Day on August 15, Pakistan marks its freedom anniversary on August 14.
The reason behind this difference lies in the events surrounding the transfer of power from British rule, Lord Mountbatten’s schedule, and later decisions taken by Pakistan’s government.
The Indian Independence Act, 1947, created two independent dominions — India and Pakistan. According to the Act, both nations officially became free from British rule from August 15, 1947.
Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah also referred to August 15 as the “birthday of the independent and sovereign state of Pakistan” in his first Independence Day message.
However, the celebrations later shifted to August 14.
The most widely accepted explanation behind Pakistan’s August 14 date is linked to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India.
Mountbatten had to personally oversee the transfer of power in both Pakistan and India. Since he could not be present in Karachi and Delhi on the same day, the ceremony in Pakistan was held on August 14.
After completing the ceremony in Karachi, Mountbatten travelled to Delhi, where India’s independence celebrations took place on August 15.
Another factor often discussed is the religious significance of the night of August 14-15, 1947.
That night coincided with the 27th night of Ramadan, known among Muslims as Laylat al-Qadr or the Night of Decree. Some historians believe this coincidence also influenced Pakistan’s decision to associate its Independence Day with August 14.
Although Pakistan became independent along with India on August 15, the country officially adopted August 14 as its Independence Day in 1948.
The decision was reportedly influenced by the Karachi power transfer ceremony, the Ramadan connection and the desire to establish a separate national identity.
Since then, Pakistan has celebrated August 14 as its Independence Day, while India continues to commemorate August 15 as the day the country gained freedom from British rule.
