New Delhi: An Air India Boeing 777-300ER service bound for San Francisco was forced to return to Delhi on Wednesday morning after a technical issue developed mid-air. It had around 230 passengers onboard and had already spent over eight hours in the air when the crew decided to turn back, according to PTI sources and flight tracking data from Flightradar24.

Data indicated that the aircraft began diverting while flying over Chinese airspace roughly three hours after departure from Delhi. It eventually landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport and no emergency was declared. The aircraft is part of Air India’s long-haul international operations connecting India with North America.

Technical inspection and safety response

The airline said the aircraft would undergo a detailed technical inspection in line with safety protocols before returning to service. It also confirmed that ground teams were assisting passengers with refreshments, hotel stays, and rescheduling options. Passengers were provided with refreshments, hotel arrangements where required, and options to reschedule onward journeys depending on availability and individual preference

. Officials said the aircraft will remain grounded until a full technical assessment is completed and necessary repairs are certified. Flight tracking platform Flightradar24 showed the aircraft altering its route mid-flight before entering a holding pattern and returning to Delhi safely.

Operational adjustments and wider context

Air India also stated that safety remains its top priority and all operational decisions are taken in accordance with regulatory requirements and standard procedures. The airline has been adjusting its domestic and international schedules in recent months as part of broader cost optimisation measures.

Industry sources said the move comes amid higher fuel prices and financial pressure on loss-making carriers in the aviation sector. Further updates are expected after inspection reports and operational reviews are completed in the coming days.

Outlook on recovery

Passengers and regulators will continue monitoring the situation as the airline works to restore normal long-haul operations soon again now.
