UN Is Urging the World to Act ‘Now For Climate’
New Delhi: World Environment Day is being observed globally on June 5, bringing renewed attention to the growing climate crisis and the need for collective action. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the annual event serves as a platform to encourage governments, businesses and individuals to adopt sustainable practices and protect natural ecosystems.
World Environment Day traces its origins to the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm. The event marked a turning point in international environmental policy and led to the establishment of UNEP. A year later, in 1973, the world celebrated the first World Environment Day under the theme “Only One Earth,” a message that remains relevant today.
Over the decades, the observance has evolved into one of the largest environmental awareness campaigns in the world, reaching millions across countries and communities.
The 2026 edition centres on the theme “Climate Action,” reflecting growing concerns over rising temperatures, extreme weather events and environmental degradation. UNEP’s campaign slogan, “Now For Climate,” calls for immediate and meaningful action to address the climate emergency.
The campaign highlights the urgent signals being sent by the Earth and urges societies to respond with stronger commitments toward reducing emissions, protecting biodiversity and building climate resilience.
This year’s global observance will be hosted by Azerbaijan in its capital, Baku. The host nation’s campaign, themed “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” focuses on tackling climate change and ecosystem decline simultaneously.
Organisers aim to demonstrate how restoring nature can strengthen communities, support biodiversity and help countries adapt to changing climate conditions.
Ahead of the observance, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the growing environmental challenges facing the planet. He noted that the last eleven years have been the warmest on record and warned that every increase in global temperatures brings greater risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.
World Environment Day continues to play a crucial role in raising awareness and inspiring action. By promoting sustainable choices and environmental responsibility, it encourages people worldwide to contribute to a healthier and more resilient future.
