New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has reserved orders on gangster Abu Saleem’s plea urging release from jail on Monday. Abu Saleem claimed that he had undergone the 25-year jail term that he was sentenced to.
He approached the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court dismissed his petition for release in April this year. He was sentenced to life imprisonment under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) by a special court for the 1995 murder case of businessman Pradeep Jain in 2015 and the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts in 2017, respectively.
A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said during the hearing on Monday that, “Even by simple calculation, from your date of incarceration on November 11, 2005, you have not completed 25 years.”
Abu Saleem was assured by the government that he would not be sentenced to jail for more than 25 years.
