New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office. With this milestone, he surpassed the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi, who first took office on May 26, 2014, has now completed over 12 years in power after winning three consecutive terms in 2014, 2019 and 2024.
To mark the occasion, the Union Cabinet adopted a resolution congratulating the Prime Minister during its meeting. Ministers praised his leadership, governance approach and policy decisions over the past decade.
The Cabinet also gave a standing ovation, acknowledging his tenure and highlighting achievements across governance, welfare delivery, infrastructure development, national security, foreign policy and agriculture.
The resolution noted government initiatives focused on poverty reduction, food security, economic growth and strengthening India’s global presence.
A meeting of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders, attended by 72 partners, also felicitated the Prime Minister. Alliance members credited his leadership for expanding the BJP’s political presence across the country and strengthening governance at the national level.
Leaders present at the meeting highlighted progress in infrastructure expansion, welfare schemes, economic reforms and national security measures.
While Modi has become the longest-serving elected Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru served from 1947 until his death in 1964, with part of his tenure predating India’s first general election in 1951–52.
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi also served nearly 16 years in office, though across two separate terms.
Addressing the milestone, Prime Minister Modi said his tenure has been guided by public trust and a commitment to development. He said the focus of his government has been on empowering youth, women and farmers while improving infrastructure and promoting digital transformation.
He added that India has strengthened its global identity over the past 12 years and continues to move forward with the support of 1.4 billion citizens.
