Congress’s Sharp Attack on Election Commission, says “Democracy Under Threat” Amid SIR Debate

New Delhi: The political dispute over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process has intensified after Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi launched a fresh attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Addressing a press conference, Singhvi alleged that the functioning of the Election Commission had raised serious concerns and accused the CEC of allegedly misleading fellow commissioners.

His remarks came after reports claimed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections over certain decisions linked to the SIR process and electoral roll procedures.

Congress alleges concerns in decision-making

Singhvi argued that the Election Commission operates as a multi-member body and said decisions should reflect the views of all members.

Referring to the reported objections, he questioned whether the concerns raised by other commissioners were properly considered during the decision-making process.

The Congress leader also raised issues related to electoral roll revision, voter registration procedures and administrative decisions linked to the SIR exercise.

Opposition continues attack over SIR process

Singhvi’s remarks came after several Opposition leaders criticised the Election Commission over the controversy.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly questioned the electoral process and alleged irregularities in voter-related matters.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also raised questions over the credibility of the Election Commission and alleged that SP supporters were removed from voter lists.

Other Opposition leaders, including Kapil Sibal, Manish Tewari and John Brittas, have also reacted to the issue and demanded greater transparency.

Election Commission rejects allegations

The Election Commission has rejected claims of internal differences among its members.

EC sources have maintained that all decisions related to the SIR process and other matters were taken collectively and approved by the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners.

The controversy surrounding the SIR process has now become a major political issue, with Opposition parties questioning the transparency of electoral roll revision and the Election Commission defending its procedures.
