After 2022 Setback, JDU Plans Fresh Purvanchal Push for UP Assembly Elections

New Delhi, September 24: Janata Dal (United), a key ally of the BJP-led NDA in Bihar, has intensified preparations to contest the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections with a special focus on the Purvanchal region. The party has indicated that it is keen to enter the electoral contest in eastern Uttar Pradesh and is exploring possibilities of fighting on around 50 Assembly seats in the region.

The move marks another attempt by JDU to expand its political presence in Uttar Pradesh after its efforts during the 2022 Assembly elections did not lead to a seat-sharing arrangement with the BJP.

JDU Targets Border Districts With Strong OBC Presence

The party is focusing on several Purvanchal districts, including Maharajganj, Ballia, Kushinagar, Chandauli and Ghazipur, where Kurmi and Kushwaha communities have a significant voter base. JDU leaders believe these social groups could play an important role in the region’s electoral dynamics.

The party’s strategy is linked to its broader focus on Other Backward Classes (OBC) voters, particularly communities that have traditionally been an important support base for JDU politics in Bihar.

Party Calls Varanasi Meeting to Plan Election Strategy

To strengthen its preparations, JDU has scheduled a workers’ meeting in Varanasi on October 25, 2026. According to sources, senior party leaders are expected to participate in the meeting, including JDU Working President Sanjay Jha, Uttar Pradesh in-charge Shravan Kumar and Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The meeting is expected to discuss the party’s roadmap for the upcoming UP elections and its organisational expansion in the state.

2022 Seat-Sharing Talks With BJP Did Not Materialise

JDU leaders have recalled that the party had attempted to contest the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from Purvanchal, but could not reach an agreement with the BJP. At that time, BJP continued its alliance arrangement with Apna Dal and Nishad Party. In the 2022 elections, JDU contested 26 seats in the Purvanchal region, but failed to win any seat.

Final Decision Depends on NDA Coordination

JDU leaders have maintained that discussions with NDA partners, including BJP are underway and no final decision has been taken yet. The party has said that the matter will ultimately depend on coordination among alliance partners and the broader strategy of NDA for UP elections.
