Dispur: The Assam government on Wednesday approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, taking a major step towards implementing one of the key promises made by the BJP-led NDA government in the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the proposed legislation will be tabled in the Assam Assembly on May 26, the final day of the upcoming session.
Speaking in Guwahati, Sarma said the government remains committed to implementing the Uniform Civil Code within the constitutional framework.

According to the Chief Minister, the draft law will primarily deal with civil matters related to personal laws and registration systems.
The proposed legislation will include provisions related to marriage registration, divorce procedures, regulation of live-in relationships and compulsory registration of marriages.
Sarma said the draft has been prepared by studying similar legal models in states such as Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Goa, where discussions or implementation of UCC-related frameworks have already taken place.
The Assam government has clarified that tribal communities and their traditional customs will remain exempt from the proposed law. Sarma said the exemption was necessary because Assam is home to several indigenous communities with distinct cultural practices, traditions and rituals.
The decision is being viewed as an effort to balance legal reform with the protection of tribal identity and customary practices in the state.

Reiterating the NDA government’s election commitments, Sarma said the UCC was part of the alliance’s manifesto and the administration intends to implement all major promises made to voters.
He added that the government’s priorities would continue to focus on Assam’s “identity and security” along with long-term development. The Chief Minister also described his second term as the beginning of the “NDA 3.0 era” in Assam.
With Cabinet approval now complete, Assam is set to join the growing list of BJP-ruled states moving toward a Uniform Civil Code.
Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to implement a UCC law in 2025, while Gujarat recently passed its own version of the legislation. Discu
