New Delhi: All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora has praised Bangladesh’s Gen-Z movement, saying it inspired young people in India to organise around democracy and voting rights. Her remarks, delivered in a video message to a Bangladeshi student organisation, have triggered a political controversy, with the BJP questioning the intent behind the ongoing protests in India.

Bora delivered the message on October 14 to mark the sixth national conference of Bangladesh’s Socialist Students Front (SSF). She expressed solidarity with the organisation and acknowledged the influence of student-led movements in Bangladesh on young activists in India.

“We extend our solidarity to you. We take inspiration from you, lessons from the movements that you lead,” Bora said in the video message. She also congratulated the Bangladeshi students for showing young people in India a path towards collective action.

Neha Bora Draws Parallels Between Student Movements

Bora said the Gen-Z movement that spread across Bangladesh had offered lessons to young people in India. She compared the causes taken up by student activists in the two countries, referring to democracy, voting rights and opposition to religious fundamentalism.

She expressed hope that students and activists from India and Bangladesh would work together towards building a better South Asia and a better world.

The remarks come amid protests in India led by opposition groups and student activists over alleged electoral irregularities and voter-roll manipulation. The Election Commission has denied allegations that voter names were deleted to favour the ruling BJP.

Why Has the Statement Triggered a Political Row?

BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised Bora’s remarks and alleged that the opposition-backed protest campaign was aimed at regime change rather than solely addressing electoral concerns. He also targeted Rahul Gandhi over the issue.

These are political allegations made by the BJP. Bora’s quoted remarks referred to drawing inspiration from Bangladesh’s youth movement and to struggles over democratic and voting rights; the video message also mentioned the fight against religious fundamentalism.

Background: Bangladesh’s Gen-Z Movement

Bangladesh’s youth-led uprising began with protests against government job quotas and later expanded into a nationwide anti-government movement. It culminated in the removal of Sheikh Hasina from power in August 2024.

The movement has since become a reference point in discussions about student activism and political change in South Asia. Bora’s comments have brought that comparison into India’s ongoing political debate, where opposition parties and student groups have been raising concerns about electoral processes.
