Chirag Paswan Backs Reservation System, Says ‘It Is Not Charity’; Urges Dialogue With Protesters

Patna: Union Minister Chirag Paswan has called for dialogue with people protesting against the reservation system, while asserting that reservation cannot be removed simply on public demand. He said the policy is a constitutional right aimed at supporting communities that have faced historical discrimination.

Speaking in Patna, Paswan responded to questions regarding protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding changes in the reservation framework. He said that those opposing reservation should engage in discussions to understand the purpose behind the system.

“Reservation is not something that can be ended simply because someone demands it. Nor is it charity given to anyone. Reservation is a constitutional right,” Paswan said, according to reports.

‘Reservation Was Created for Social Justice’

Paswan said the reservation system was introduced to help communities that faced social exclusion and discrimination for generations gain representation and opportunities.

He argued that reservation should not be viewed as a government favour or a temporary benefit but as a constitutional mechanism designed to ensure equality and inclusion.

The Union Minister said that issues surrounding reservation should be addressed through democratic discussions rather than confrontation.

Anti-Reservation Protests Gain Attention

Paswan’s remarks came amid protests by groups demanding changes in the existing reservation system. Demonstrators have been raising concerns over the impact of affirmative action policies and calling for a review of the current framework.

The protests gained momentum after wider student demonstrations over issues related to examination irregularities and paper leaks, where demands had focused on accountability and reforms.

Paswan Calls for Understanding Through Dialogue

The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader said protesters have the right to express their views but stressed that conversations are necessary to understand why reservation was introduced.

He said social inequalities that led to the creation of reservation policies continue to exist in various forms, making the system relevant even today.
