Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakeena Itoo has issued a strong message on the safety of girl students, stating that education cannot achieve its real purpose if students, especially girls, do not feel safe inside schools and colleges.
The Minister said the government has adopted a strict zero-tolerance approach towards harassment, misconduct and any activity that threatens the dignity and security of students. She made it clear that officials, teachers or staff members found involved in any wrongdoing would face strict disciplinary proceedings along with legal action under the relevant laws.
She highlighted that educational institutions were not only places for academic growth but also environments where students should feel protected, respected and confident. She said every girl student has the right to access education without fear, discrimination, pressure or intimidation.
The Minister stressed that parents should have complete confidence while sending their daughters to schools and colleges. According to her, creating a safe educational atmosphere was essential for improving girls’ participation in education and ensuring equal opportunities.
The Education Minister said every complaint related to harassment, inappropriate behaviour or violation of student rights would be examined through a transparent and time-bound mechanism. She directed educational authorities to ensure that sensitive cases were investigated quickly and fairly. The objective was to maintain accountability within institutions and ensure that justice was not delayed.
Officials and employees found guilty after proper inquiry could face departmental action, suspension, termination of service and legal proceedings depending on the seriousness of the offence.
Itoo also called upon teachers, principals and educational administrators to play a proactive role in maintaining a safe campus environment. She said educators have a responsibility beyond teaching academic subjects. They must ensure that students receive emotional support, respect and protection within the institution.
The Minister urged schools and colleges to strengthen internal monitoring systems, grievance redressal mechanisms and student support structures to address safety-related concerns effectively.
The statement comes amid increasing national discussions on women’s safety and protection of students in educational institutions. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has maintained that student welfare, institutional accountability and quality education remain key priorities.
The government is working towards creating secure, inclusive and transparent campuses where students can focus on learning without fear.
Sakeena Itoo’s remarks underline the administration’s commitment to strengthening safety protocols in schools and colleges and ensuring that every student gets an environment where education, dignity and equality go together.
