New Delhi: What began as an Opposition march towards the Election Commission headquarters on Tuesday took an unexpected turn when Akashvani Bhavan became the centre of a prolonged political protest. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several INDIA bloc leaders eventually staged a sit-in inside the historic campus after being stopped by Delhi Police.

March Towards Election Commission Stopped

The Opposition leaders had planned to march from Parliament towards Nirvachan Sadan to raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demand action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The march was stopped by police near the Election Commission office. As several leaders were detained, Rahul Gandhi climbed a barricade and later moved towards Akashvani Bhavan, where Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was among those being taken away in a police bus.

The situation changed when Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises through an iron gate that was reportedly still being used by staff. Their entry turned the broadcaster's campus into an unexpected protest venue.

Other Opposition leaders subsequently joined them, and the demonstration continued for several hours. Leaders demanded an opportunity to meet the Election Commission and reiterated their allegations concerning electoral rolls and the SIR exercise.

Historic Building Becomes Political Flashpoint

Akashvani Bhavan is not an ordinary government complex. Built in the 1940s, its distinctive semi-circular structure houses various All India Radio operations, including news, drama and FM services. The campus also has heritage significance.

The protest continued until Delhi Police moved in during the evening to clear the premises. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other Opposition leaders were detained and taken to the Kingsway Camp police lines. They were later released.
