New Delhi: The political atmosphere in Punjab has become highly charged following the defection of several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs to the BJP. Widespread resentment regarding this decision is evident among party workers.

The most striking manifestation of this anger emerged when workers scrawled the word "Traitor" on the walls outside the residence of former cricketer and MP Harbhajan Singh.

Which Leaders Switched Parties?

The seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs who joined the BJP include Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Ashok Mittal, and Vikram Sahney.

This decision by these leaders has triggered a major political crisis within the party.

Why Has Workers' Resentment Intensified?

AAP workers viewed these leaders as deeply committed to the party's ideology. In particular, people had high expectations from popular figures like Harbhajan Singh, believing they would stand steadfastly by the party.

When they abruptly defected to the BJP, their actions were perceived as an act of "betrayal." This is the primary reason why the backlash has become so intense.

A Major Blow to the Party

The simultaneous departure of such a large number of MPs is considered a massive setback for the AAP. This development is not only tarnishing the party's public image but also fueling internal instability within the organization.

In Punjab—widely regarded as a strong bastion for the AAP—such vocal dissent has become a matter of serious concern for the party. In the wake of these events, pressure has mounted on the AAP leadership to take control of the situation and regain the trust of its workers. Conversely, for the BJP, this is being viewed as an opportunity to consolidate its political strength.

All in all, the defection of these MPs to the BJP has plunged the AAP into a deep crisis. The anger of the party workers is now spilling out into the open—a factor that could significantly impact the party's political trajectory in the days to come.
