New Delhi: The INDIA bloc held a crucial meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday amid the ongoing political controversy over the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders discussed their strategy on the issue and deliberated on possible joint action.
The meeting was attended by several senior opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and leaders from other INDIA bloc parties. The discussions focused on the SIR process, electoral roll-related concerns and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The Special Intensive Revision of voter lists has become the main point of political debate between opposition parties and the Election Commission. Opposition leaders have raised concerns over voter list changes and have demanded greater transparency in the process.
The Election Commission has maintained that the SIR process and related decisions follow legal procedures. The poll body has also said that decisions related to the exercise were taken through the prescribed process.
Ahead of the meeting, opposition parties discussed several demands, including transparency in electoral roll changes and action related to the concerns raised over CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The issue of a possible parliamentary move against the CEC was also among the matters discussed by some opposition leaders.
Congress has raised multiple demands related to the SIR process, including disclosure of voter list changes and safeguards for voters affected during revision exercises.
The meeting also highlighted differences among alliance partners. Reports said that some parties, including DMK and AAP, did not attend the session, while other opposition parties participated in the discussions.
The INDIA bloc leaders are expected to continue discussions on their future political strategy as the debate over the Election Commission and voter list revision remains a major issue.
“Members of the Constituent Assembly very well asserted that democracy has meaning only when the vote of every eligible citizen carries equal value. That is why the principle of one person, one vote, one value lies at the heart of our Republic. Today, that principle is facing a serious threat.”
The INDIA bloc meeting is underway at the Constitutional Club of India in New Delhi. The parties participating are INC, SP, AITC, NCP(SP), SS (UBT), RJD, CPM, CPI, JKNC, JKPDP, JMM, CPI-ML, IUML, KC(M), MDMK, VCK, RSP, KC(J) and AIFB.
“These and other Opposition parties stand united to protect the Constitution of India from repeated assaults of the Modi Govt - most recently its Vote Chori gameplan through the ECI to remain in power,” Congress general secretary in-charge communications, said on X.
Ahead of the INDIA bloc meeting on Wednesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh said his party would not attend the meeting, pointing out that AAP is not part of the opposition alliance.
“Since AAP is not part of the INDIA alliance, the question of attending the meeting does not arise,” Singh said.

Ahead of INDIA bloc meeting, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said, "The way tampering has occurred throughout the entire election process, the way it has been exposed, two election commissioners have raised questions about it—that's what this meeting is about. Fraud has happened in all the elections that have taken place. Laws were changed in advance to protect Gyanesh Kumar. The Chief Justice was removed from the selection process first. The voting record, which should be maintained, is now kept for only 45 days. Earlier, it used to be for 1 year.
