New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced a Special Strategic Partnership between India and Italy during a joint press conference in Rome alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The announcement came during Modi’s visit to Italy as part of his five-nation diplomatic tour.

Focus on trade and India-EU agreement

During the talks, Prime Minister Modi thanked Italy for supporting the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement. He stated that both nations would work towards its early implementation to ensure businesses from both sides benefit from stronger economic cooperation and market access.

Partnership in AI, space and innovation

The two leaders discussed expanding collaboration in emerging technologies and strategic sectors. Modi highlighted that India and Italy hold significant opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum technology, civil nuclear energy and space research.

To strengthen innovation-driven ties, the Prime Minister announced the creation of an India-Italy Innovation Centre. The proposed platform will connect startups, industries and research institutions from both countries to promote technological development and joint projects.

High-Level talks in Rome

Before the joint media address, Modi received a ceremonial military welcome in Rome and later held detailed bilateral discussions with Meloni. The leaders exchanged views on defence cooperation, clean energy initiatives, technology partnerships and trade expansion.

Prime Minister Modi also extended an invitation to Giorgia Meloni to visit India, signalling continued diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
