Punjab Election 2027: BJP’s Big Solo Move, Will Fight All 117 Seats Without SAD
Chandigarh: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its preparations for the Punjab Assembly elections 2027 with a clear message that the party is gearing up for an independent electoral battle across all 117 constituencies of the state.
BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh, during his two-day organisational visit to Punjab, directed party leaders and workers to strengthen the grassroots network and prepare for a full-fledged contest without depending on any alliance partner.
The announcement assumes significance as political circles had been closely watching the possibility of a renewed BJP-Shiromani Akali Dal partnership ahead of the crucial state elections. However, the BJP’s latest organisational roadmap indicates that the party is focusing on expanding its own political base and building a stronger presence across Punjab.
Addressing party workers and leaders during organisational meetings in Patiala, BL Santosh emphasised the need for booth-level strengthening, wider public outreach and increased coordination among party cadres.
The party leadership has asked its workers to prepare for electoral competition in every Assembly constituency, with a focus on strengthening local structures, connecting with voters and highlighting the policies and initiatives of the central government. The strategy reflects the party’s ambition to emerge as a major political force in Punjab by increasing its footprint beyond its traditional areas of influence.
For decades, the BJP contested Punjab elections largely in alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, with the Akali Dal playing the dominant role in the partnership. The latest approach signals the BJP’s attempt to establish an independent identity among Punjab voters.
The saffron party's solo election preparation comes after weeks of speculation regarding a possible political reunion with SAD. The discussions gained momentum after SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament on August 7.
The meeting triggered political speculation about whether the two former allies could come together once again for the Punjab Assembly elections. Statements from senior Akali leaders further fuelled discussions about a possible understanding between the two parties.
However, BL Santosh’s direction to prepare for all 117 seats suggests that the BJP is currently keeping its organisational machinery ready for an independent contest. Political analysts believe the party’s strategy allows it to maintain flexibility while strengthening its bargaining position ahead of future electoral negotiations.
The BJP has been working to strengthen its organisation in Punjab after ending its long-standing alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal in 2020. During the recent organisational meetings, party leadership reviewed the functioning of its state unit and discussed measures to improve booth management, voter engagement and cadre mobilisation.
The party has also focused on maintaining a balance between experienced workers and new members joining the organisation. BJP leaders believe that a stronger independent network could help the party reach sections of voters beyond its traditional support base and create a wider electoral presence in the state.
BJP and SAD shared a decades-long political partnership before their separation in 2020. The Akali Dal withdrew from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) following differences over the three farm laws introduced by the Centre. The laws were later repealed by the Union government, but the political relationship between the two parties did not immediately recover.
The alliance had played a significant role in Punjab politics for years, with both parties contesting elections through a seat-sharing arrangement. Any future reunion between the BJP and SAD would require discussions on seat allocation, election strategy and common political priorities.
As part of its election strategy, Santosh is conducting meetings with party leaders and office bearers across Punjab, including Patiala, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. The objective of these meetings is to assess organisational strength, improve coordination and prepare workers for the upcoming electoral challenge.
The party is also focusing on strengthening booth-level committees and ensuring that government schemes and policy initiatives reach voters directly. The organisational review is expected to provide the BJP’s central leadership with a clearer assessment of its election readiness in Punjab.
BJP’s decision to prepare for a solo contest could significantly influence the political landscape of Punjab ahead of the 2027 elections. The state is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest involving the BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiromani Akali Dal.
A separate BJP campaign could alter traditional electoral calculations, especially in constituencies where alliance dynamics have historically played a major role. For the Shiromani Akali Dal, BJP’s current position may create uncertainty after hopes of a renewed partnership had emerged among sections of party supporters.
The final electoral arrangement between the BJP and SAD will depend on future political developments and decisions by the central leadership of both parties. For now, the BJP has directed its cadre to prepare for a direct fight across all 117 Assembly seats, signalling that organisational expansion will remain its top priority.
