Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay is set to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after formally staking claim to form the government on Saturday evening. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday at 3:15 pm at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The actor-turned-politician met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and submitted letters of support from alliance partners backing his claim to power in the 234-member Assembly.

Political Uncertainty Ends in Tamil Nadu

The development brings an end to several days of intense political negotiations following the fractured mandate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

TVK had emerged as the single-largest party by winning 108 seats but remained short of the majority mark needed to form the government on its own. Over the past few days, Vijay held multiple rounds of meetings with political parties and the Governor to gather support.

Saturday’s meeting marked the fourth time Vijay met the Governor within four days.

VCK and IUML Extend Support

The final breakthrough came after Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) announced unconditional support to the Vijay-led alliance.

Leaders from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML accompanied Vijay during his meeting with the Governor, signalling the formal consolidation of support behind TVK. With the latest additions, the alliance crossed the majority mark comfortably.

How the Numbers Add Up

The TVK-led alliance now commands the support of 121 MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Alliance Strength:

  • TVK: 108 seats
  • Congress: 5 seats
  • CPI: 2 seats
  • CPI(M): 2 seats
  • VCK: 2 seats
  • IUML: 2 seats

The combined support has given Vijay enough numbers to form a stable government in the state.

A Major Political Shift in Tamil Nadu

The 2026 Assembly election has significantly altered Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, ending decades of dominance by the DMK and AIADMK.

Vijay’s rapid rise from cinema to state leadership has reshaped electoral politics in the state, especially among younger voters and first-time supporters. Political analysts believe the formation of the new government could mark the beginning of a new political chapter in Tamil Nadu.
