Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has criticised the demolition of a mosque in Saharanpur, alleging that those involved in removing religious structures cannot claim to follow the principles of Sanatan values.
Reacting to the action, Yadav said that respecting all religions and maintaining harmony is an important part of Indian culture. He questioned the demolition of places of worship and said such actions go against the spirit of mutual respect.
The controversy erupted after authorities demolished a mosque structure in Saharanpur following a court order. Officials said the action was taken after the structure was found to be illegally constructed on government land.
Heavy security was deployed in the area during the demolition to maintain law and order. Authorities said the process was carried out according to legal procedures.
Akhilesh Yadav’s remarks have added a political angle to the issue, with opposition leaders questioning the administration’s action. The SP chief said India’s identity lies in unity and respect for different faiths.
Meanwhile, officials have maintained that the demolition was a legal action based on court directions and not linked to any political motive.
