Kolkata: Even as Trinamool Congress seemed to be headed for a major upset, its leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee looks headed for a victory against her nearest rival from BJP Suvendu Adhikari in the high-stakes Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.
According to the latest update available regarding counting of votes, Mamata Banerjee is leading with 25942 votes in Bhabanipur.
Adhikari is trailing with 9236 votes.
Pradip Prasad of the Congress is way behind with 261 votes.
This is the update available after 4th round of counting, with 16 more rounds to be completed.
Bhabanipur Assembly constituency is located in the Kolkata district of West Bengal.
In the last Assembly elections in 2021, Mamata Banerjee had won from this constituency by bagging 85,263 votes, defeating Priyanka Tibrewal of the BJP who got 26,428 votes.
Banerjee, in that election, had got 71.90 percent votes, while 22.29 percent votes.
At that time, Banerjee had contested from Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in a by-election after losing narrowly from Nandigram Assembly constituency to Suvendu Adhikari.
She needed to be an elected member of the Legislative Assembly to retain her position as the Chief Minister.
Sovandeb Chattopadhay, who had won the Bhabanipur seat in the April 2021 Assembly elections, resigned as MLA on May 21, 2021 to pave the way for Mamata Banerjee to contest in the by-election.
