Kolkata: A fresh political controversy has emerged in West Bengal after Dr. Baidyanath Ghosh Dastidar, the son of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, announced plans to initiate legal proceedings against several senior political figures over remarks he describes as false and defamatory.
The dispute centers on allegations that Baidyanath had sought a party ticket to contest from the Barasat Assembly constituency, a claim he has strongly denied.
In a letter addressed to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee and senior leaders Kalyan Banerjee, Sougata Roy, Mahua Moitra, and former TMC leader Sonali Guha, Baidyanath rejected assertions that he had expressed interest in contesting elections from Barasat.
According to him, the statements made publicly by various political figures are inaccurate and have caused damage to his reputation. He stated that legal notices would be issued to all concerned individuals and that he is seeking a public apology along with a withdrawal of the disputed remarks.
Apart from denying the ticket-related allegations, Baidyanath also took exception to comments reportedly made by Sonali Guha regarding his personal life and that of his mother, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
The psychiatrist dismissed the claims as entirely baseless and said the statements had no factual foundation. He maintained that the allegations were untrue and should be publicly retracted.
In his communication, Baidyanath emphasized that he is providing an opportunity for those involved to clarify or withdraw their remarks before pursuing legal remedies.
He said a formal apology and correction of the statements would be the preferred outcome. However, if no satisfactory response is received, he intends to proceed with defamation proceedings and other legal options available under the law.
The development has drawn attention within political circles, as it involves prominent leaders associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress. While no official response has been issued by those named in the letter, the controversy has sparked fresh debate over internal disagreements and public statements made by party leaders.
The matter is expected to gain further attention once the proposed legal notices are formally served.
