‘Your Duty To Ensure Accountability’: Rahul Gandhi, Kharge Write to PM Modi Over Ram Mandir Donation Row

New Delhi: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an independent and comprehensive investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving donations made to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

In their joint letter issued on Sunday, the Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha said devotees who contributed their savings with faith deserved transparency regarding how their offerings were handled. They described the Prime Minister’s silence on the controversy as unacceptable.

Congress demands examination of all offerings

The two leaders called for scrutiny of the Trust’s financial affairs, including the handling of cash, gold, silver and other offerings received from devotees. They also demanded that the findings of the inquiry and the Trust’s accounts be placed in the public domain.

Rahul Gandhi and Kharge said anyone found responsible should face action regardless of their position or influence.

Supreme Court seeks SIT status report

The controversy concerns allegations that donations collected at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya were misappropriated. The Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team to examine the matter.

The Supreme Court has subsequently sought a status report on the SIT investigation and details about the composition of the investigative team. It has also issued notice to the temple Trust. No final judicial finding has yet been made, and the investigation remains underway.

Trust faced leadership changes

The case has already led to major developments within the Trust. General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra resigned amid the controversy, after which the organisation announced leadership and administrative changes. Authorities have also arrested several accused and recovered part of the allegedly stolen money.

The issue is expected to remain politically significant as the Congress prepares to raise the alleged donation theft during Parliament’s Monsoon Session.
