New Delhi: In a sharp rebuttal, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma has strongly denied allegations of holding foreign passports and overseas assets, escalating a political face-off between the BJP and the Congress ahead of the Assam assembly elections.

Sharma dismissed the allegations as “laughable,” stating that neither she nor her family members have any business interests or assets outside India, including in Dubai, while responding to claims raised by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi.

Riniki Bhuyan Rejects Foreign Asset Claims

Her remarks followed claims by Congress leaders suggesting she held multiple foreign passports and had links to international properties and companies.

Counterattack on Gaurav Gogoi

Turning the tables, Sharma questioned Gaurav Gogoi, asking whether his wife had ever maintained bank accounts in Pakistan and whether those details would be disclosed publicly.

This line of attack echoed earlier statements by Sarma, who alleged the existence of such accounts. Gogoi has denied the claims, calling them politically motivated.

Congress Leaders Raise Passport Questions

The issue gained momentum after Congress leader Pawan Khera, along with Gogoi, raised questions about Sharma allegedly holding passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda.

They also flagged purported links to a company registered in Wyoming, United States, and questioned whether a Dubai “Golden Visa” was involved.

Sarma Dismisses Documents as Fabricated

Chief Minister Sarma rejected the allegations, asserting that the documents cited were fabricated and sourced from unreliable online platforms.

To underline his claim, he said a similar company could be registered in anyone’s name in Wyoming for a nominal fee, and alleged that such an exercise had been carried out to demonstrate how easily records can be created.

Legal Action and Escalation

Sarma confirmed that his wife has filed a police complaint against Khera and warned of strict legal action. He also dismissed the passport-related claims, saying the documents cited were inaccurate or belonged to other individuals.

As both sides continue to trade accusations, the controversy has intensified the political atmosphere in Assam in the run-up to the elections.
